…that comes over you when you do something that you know to be wrong but yet still seemingly can’t help but do it? I was praying over some stuff that came to mind and then I recalled Romans 12:2. It goes “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Growing up in the world that we live in, seeing the way relationships are handled, the way business deals are secured etc, has unconsciously etched these behavioural tendencies into our minds. Depending on what we observe to be acceptable and unacceptable, our minds classify them according to the level of acceptance. Some actions/behaviours are classified “socially desirable”, some others “socially acceptable but not necessarily desirable” and others “socially condemned”, not forgetting the many other “in-betweens”. Granted that there is merit to having such a layout in our heads as it helps us to function more effectively in our day to day lives, let us not ignore its demerits as well.
I have friends whom I’ve known for some time, came from good schools, with a good level of education, yet despite all these, they too at some point in their lives have been “bastards” due to certain things that they did knowing that it was wrong. I don’t profess to be a saint, but before the saving grace of Christ, I was no different from them. Has being saved made a difference in my life? Very simply, yes.
Is there a single true standard upon which all others have been formed around? One that we can trust and count on unfailingly? One that has stood unwavering since the very birth of time? Yes. It’s right in front of us. Some of us choose to see it, some of us acknowledge its presence but dismiss its truths, some of us turn a blind eye to it, some think it’s just another piece of literary work. What do you think?

Selwyn Hughes commented that this generation is hanging its hopes on the wrong peg – materialism. When the peg of of materialistic philosophy is wrenched out by the economic calamity – something that is causing much fear now – then our hopes, our plans, our confidence go with it.
Glad that we can have hope in God, for as He holds amid the stress of things, everything holds.
